Is there something I can add to the item template to make the links open in a new window instead of the current window?

Yeah, basic HTML. Add
Code:
target="_blank"
into you "a" tag.

I meant the xml template, not the html template.

No. How XML displayed is completely controlled by the feed reader used to view it. If it is converted to HTML with RSS2HTML, then you have control.
